Boat launch for successful students

Students from the Boat Building Academy launched four boats into Lyme Regis harbour to mark the end of their 38-week course.

All of the boats, a traditional clinker Mallard', a glued clinker Tammie Norrie', a carvel 15' Maine coast Peapod and a prototype for a sectional dinghy, were built as part of the City & Guilds course in boat-building, maintenance and support.

Student Ian Thomson, who designed and built the prototype dinghy, said his idea was inspired by the popularity of the inflatable dinghy, which has been due to its easy storage.

He said: "I wanted the best of both worlds - a good-looking, practical tender that could be rowed and sailed easily, combined with something that fitted into a compact space.

"Nestaway' was born, a pram stem dinghy in two sections, with a detachable bow that fits into the stern which enables storage in a space measuring just 5' x 4'.' After a couple of unsuccessful attempts at adapting existing boats, Ian joined the course at the academy and, using their workshops, machinery and expertise, built his prototype.

He will start full production of the boats in September, and has already received an order. The boat's maiden voyage was a resounding success.

Principal of the academy Yvonne Green said: "It is a proud day when the students launch their boats, the culmination of a very intensive 38-week course.

"We are particularly pleased that Ian chose a course at the Boat Building Academy, and delighted that we have played a part in the development of such a practical, fun and ingenious little boat."
