Our share of £2bn Olympic tourism

WEYMOUTH and Portland may benefit from a share in an extra £2.1 billion worth of tourism set to be brought to the UK by the 2012 London Olympics, it was claimed today.

And once the games are over, south and west Dorset will lay claim to a portion of £400m forecast to go to venues outside of London between 2013 and 2017.

Satellite venues such as Weymouth and Portland - home of the sailing events - will rake in as much as a third of the UK's £1.27 billion post-Olympics tourism boom, an Oxford Economics report predicts.

Forecasting company Oxford Economics drew up the report for the VisitBritain and Visit London tourism organisations.

Coun Kate Wheller, who is Weymouth and Portland Borough Council's tourism spokesman, welcomed news of increased revenue for the area beyond 2012.

She said: "We're leaving a lasting legacy of improvement for the area.

"Not only are we putting efforts in to bring people down for 2012 and beyond, we're offering an improved quality of life for our residents and a much stronger economy for the people of Dorset."

South and West Dorset will be hoping to lure a share of tourists around the globe who say the games make the UK a more desirable destination.

Some 22 per cent of people worldwide say they are more likely to visit the UK because of the Olympics, a Visit Britain surveys reveal.

But a much higher proportion of tourists from India, China, Mexico, Malaysia and Indonesia plan to journey to the UK before, during and after the games.

Coun Wheller said these countries could potentially be key tourism markets for Weymouth and Portland to tap into.

"We're going to look at this piece of research very carefully and if that's the countries which are interested, then we'll see if we can target them."

But the Oxford Economics report warns the extra revenue will only come if there is good planning for the games and investment in infrastructure - something Weymouth and Portland is well prepared for, Coun Wheller said.

How are we going to keep OLYMPIC visitors away from Portland Bill? WHY? The mens toilets are shut, the disabled toilets are shut, and the ladies loos are disgusting. They need to be demolished and rebuilt ASAP, butI doubt they will even have been touched by 2012!!!! The carpark charges at Portland Bill should ensure a state of the art public convenience for everyone.

WTF are you talking about?

Sorting out the athletic facilities at the Marsh would be a nice Olympic Legacy - not the bogs on Portland Bill!

And Terry, please stop moaning all the time and try being a bit positive for once!

Why, do you pee in the street then? Have you any idea how many people visit PB. And international visitors sussing out the territory, where is your pride then?

Looking forward to 2012. You haven't got a clue what it is all about. Sporting facilities for everyone not just poxxy athletics and sailing. How about the hold your bladder competitions for all our international visitors. Or even hold your breath competition for the ladies or perhaps skating on urine or even dart playing with needles or...... Aren't you just a little bit disgusted with our lack of dignity towards our visitors from all over the world. Certainly seeing the distressed visitors last weekend made me embarrassed with our councils.

It's all a load of B***ocks.

Rich getting richer nd you, the tax payer, are spoon fed tales of legacy and finance like bloody sheep.

Open your eyes to this crap, every country who hosts this is STILL paying for it decades after!

So what have you seen that is going to be done that raises your hopes so much? Please let me know so that I and others can rejoice. The latest suggestion to tart up the seafront to look like a mini Blackpool? The suggestion to turn Greenhill into a car park? Over the years that I have lived in Weymouth, I have seen little that I would regard as improvements. Unfortunately I am too old now to consider moving away and doubt that I could afford to move anyway due to the magnificent pension I receive from this Government filled with MPs with their feather-bedded pensions.

Guys, Gals and others. Personally you all complain a tad too much though who am i to tell you that what your saying solves nothing. This page is not a news board so instead of reporting toilet problems and the fiasco over 2012, maybe a bit of good old elbow grease might just get you all what you want. toilet problems...sign a petition or organise some sort of meeting with a representative from your local disctrict council. and with the fiasco over 2012, i ensure you that everything is gonna be fine no problems, worst case scenario? bah it wont happen.

well thanks this speech definetly let out my 17 year old political self.

if this sounded harsh at any points please, i didnt meant it. this was an education.

Bye.

James.
