Fundraiser success for RDYC yacht

THE Royal Dorset Yacht Club Commodore and his crew raised £705 for a Weymouth sailing initiative when they took on a charity race.
Captain Gareth Peaston entered his yacht Wahinee Waves crewed by wife Linda, Paul Medway, Mike Winter and Michael Hall in the seventh Eddystone Pursuit Race to raise money for MV Freedom, a charity that takes disabled people to sea.
The event organised by the Eleanor Creeke Charitable Settlement is designed to help raise money for local charities, and is run out of the Royal Western Yacht Club at Plymouth.
Prior to departure the Weymouth crew raised £520 in sponsorship.
Designated start times for the race varied from 9am for the slowest boats until 12.10pm for the out and out racing machines.
Wahinee Waves started at 10.30am from the RWYC start-line and came 43rd out of 64 boats, racing 26.1 miles around the Hands Deep Buoy and back.
In bright sunny weather and in winds gusting to force seven they finished in three hours and 28 minutes and were placed 17th - winning a further £185 from the Eleanor Creeke Charitable Settlement for MV Freedom.
Captain Peaston said: "After the race there was a reception and supper at the Royal Western Yacht Club followed by a Spitfire flypast and aerobatic display plus a firework display from the Citadel.
"The whole event was hugely enjoyable and a great way to raise money for charity whilst enjoying oneself at the same time."
Next year's event, the eighth running, will be held on the July 11.
