TWO gigs from Weymouth Rowing Club were among a record number of entries at the 19th Pilot Gig Rowing Championships.
Members raced Sir Tristan and Isolde in the event at the Isles of Scilly after the club committee made the difficult decision to leave their third gig Penny behind.
Penny gave up her chance of sporting success to feature in this week's filming of the Boat that Rocked at Portland Port.
Despite being without a gig, the club's C crews also travelled to St Mary's Quay and managed to borrow spare gigs from other clubs.
The women's C crew finished 83rd racing Teignmouth gig club's Jeannie, while the men's C crew lifted the booby prize of a wooden spoon with great sportsmanship after they got behind the oars of a leaky old vessel.
The club's A teams fared better with the women finishing 17th out of 38 gigs in the Women's Veteran Race, and the men coming 29th in a hotly contested Men's Veterans Race of 55 boats.
The next day Weymouth's men's A crew achieved 19th place out of 109 gigs - up six places from last year.
Club member Mark Pettis said "It was a tremendous event to participate in, Isolde has been a privilege to row, what an atmosphere."

In the women's races, Weymouth A crew member Caroline Drever said: "It was like a knife edge on the start line with all the crew focused on one thing, staying in the B heat.
"It was brilliant and all the hard training had paid off, only 10 away from the final - look out next year."
Chairman of Weymouth Rowing Club and Ladies Cox, Heddon Johnson, said: "After all the worry of the gigs getting to St Mary's and having to leave Penny behind all the crews had been able to participate.
"Weymouth have - as always in their bright green boats and kit - made themselves known, every where I have been.
"In shops, bars and restaurants, people have been talking about our regatta the Universal Big Gig in July so we are expecting an influx of entry forms for that."
