TWO Weymouth sailors have achieved number one spots in the Laser national rankings.

Beijing-bound Laser Standard sailor Paul Goodison and Laser Radial sailor Jon Emmett maintained their top forms at the deciding event at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.

The Laser Qualifier attracted hundreds of sailors to compete in Portland Harbour.

Goodison of Wyke Regis dominated the Laser Standard men's single-handed dinghy class to finish four points clear of his nearest rival.

He won gold ahead of 42 other sailors.

While Jon Emmett of Holly Road maintained his number one spot despite six months out due to neck surgery and missing two of the last four events.

His top result ahead of 90 other entries in the Laser Radial single-handed men and women's event has qualified him to represent the United Kingdom at the Europeans.

Emmett added: "There was a lot of pressure in Weymouth as whatever result I got I had to count.

"The wind was light all weekend, so my lack of weight was not a problem.

"In fact it was so light we could not sail on the Saturday. On Sunday we had three races and I scored a six - which I discarded - when I was on the left-hand side of the start line and the wind went right.

"I didn't make the same mistake again, starting on the right for the next two races and winning both comfortably to take the regatta on tie-breaker - phew."

Overall Emmett achieved a lead of 11 points in the national rankings.

His competitors included Beijing-bound Penny Clark who will represent the women's Laser Radial class for Team GB in August's Olympic Games.
